It is advisable to terminate the mobile, internet, electricity, etc contracts at the correct time so that it is not getting extended automatically.

Why it is important to terminate?

One of the main reasons to terminate the contract is to save money. If you terminate periodically and get a new contract, there are more possibilities to get good offers.

The second reason is that the technology gets updated and also the speed of the internet gets much better. So, it could be an opportunity to get high-speed internet at a reasonable cost.

Mobile contract

Mobile contracts are available for,

  • 1 month
  • 24 months
  • 36 months

There might be also possibilities to get a contract with another time period. But in this post, I have considered the 24 months contract to explain it easily.

Cancellation period (Kündigungsfrist)

In general, the contract termination period is 3 months for the mobile contract or internet contract. The details regarding the cancelation period will be clearly mentioned in your contract.

How the cancellation period months are calculated?

The cancellation period will be calculated based on the date your contract had begun. It is important that your contract termination should reach the internet provider before the termination period.

If your termination has reached one day later, there are more possibilities that the provider will not accept your termination. The contract will automatically renew for another year or as mentioned in the contract.

Example for termination period

You made a contract on 15.03.2020 and your contract is valid till 15.03.2022. In this case, your contract termination letter should reach the provider in December before 15.12.20201.

Better early than late

I would suggest you send the contract termination letter before 4 or 5 months. Sometimes your post may be delivered late or there could be any other issues. To be on the safer side, it’s better to be early than late.

Termination acceptance

Once the provider has received the contract termination, they will send the acceptance per email or post. This is important information for you to make sure that the termination is successful.

In some cases, the provider will provide other offers to you once they have received your termination letter or email. If you don’t know whether to get the offer or wait for some more time to think about it, it’s better to ask for the contract termination confirmation.

It is possible to withdraw the termination and continue with them but it’s not possible to get termination acceptance if you haven’t decided before the termination period.

Early contract termination

Early termination due to other best offers doesn’t make any sense. You have to pay a huge amount (like a penalty) before the contract termination.

Early termination due to relocation

It is possible to terminate the contract before the end of the contract period if you are relocating to another country. In this case, the minimum notice period of 3 months should be served. So it’s better to cancel early as possible.

The cancellation will not be easy as the general contract termination. It’s also necessary to provide some documents to prove that you are moving out of the country or moved out of the country.

Free cancelation

You can cancel your mobile or internet contract free of charge in one of the following situations. The network provider will not ask any questions which stop the cancelation.

  • During the first 14 days of your contract
  • If your network provider raises the monthly fee during your contract period

Electricity contract termination

I have already written a post about how you can terminate the electricity (Strom) contract in Germany and also its advantages, tips to save money. You can read it below.
