People who are coming to Germany should learn the German language. But there are also exceptions.

University degree

If you have a university degree and there are possibilities for you to find a job in Germany with your language skills, then it is not necessary for you to learn the German language.

In my opinion, there will not be any issues for most of the Engineers who had completed their degrees in the English language. There are also more possibilities for the people who had completed their degree in Arts & Science in the English language.

Not planning to permanently settle in Germany

This applies to most of the employees who are coming to Germany for onsite work. In this case, your spouse might have a limited-time contract. So it is not necessary to learn the German language in your home country to join your spouse.

Your spouse holds an EU Blue Card (Blaue Karte EU)

If your spouse holds an EU Blue Card (not only from Germany), then you are eligible to come to Germany without German language certificate.

Permanent Residence (Niederlassungserlaubnis)

It is possible to come to Germany without learning the German language if your spouse has a permanent residence from Germany and comes under one of the below categories.

High skilled workers like,

  • Engineers
  • Researchers
  • Founder of a company
  • Holds residence permit from other EU countries.

If your spouse had done their master studies in Germany and working in here, the German language is not necessary for the visa purpose.

Other country citizens

If your spouse is a citizen from one of the below countries, then there is no need to learn the German language.

  • Australia
  • Israel
  • Japan
  • Canada
  • The Republic of Korea
  • Newzealand
  • United States of America
  • Andorra
  • Honduras
  • Monaco
  • San Marino

Kindly read the recent information from Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (www.bamf.de) website.

European countries citizen

If your spouse is a citizen of any European countries, then it is not necessary to learn German language for the visa purpose.

Health issues

If you can’t learn the German language due to physical or mental illness or handicap, you get an exception from learning the German language for the visa purpose.

Note

The above-mentioned are the most common exceptions. There are some other rules with which the above-mentioned statement can be invalid. So kindly consider this post as guidance and refer to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees for the latest information.
